ABOUT ABOUT

Our production of Tartuffe is on hold due to coronavirus concerns and WPU policy.  More details to follow.

“The purpose of comedy is to correct the faults of men,” pleaded Moliere to King Louis XIV in 1664 when his play Tartuffe was banned for daring to expose the hypocrisy of the church. In it, a family’s patriarch becomes spiritually enraptured by the priest-like (and obviously fraudulent) Tartuffe. To gain favor, the patriarch nearly destroys his wealth, reputation, and family relationships. Sharply witty and occasionally downright silly, Moliere’s warning against fanaticism and blind faith is still palpably resonant with today’s audiences. (Rated PG)
